Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has appointed the daughter of former powerful Kibaki-era minister John Michuki to the board of the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC).

The corporation, whose mandate includes the development of agriculture and related industries through the provision of loans and the provision of managerial and technical assistance to farmers, is considered one of the strategic public entities.

In a gazette notice, Mr. Munya appointed Columbia University-trained financial analyst and wealth coach Wanja Michuki, effective May 13, 2022. The others are Dr. Zablon Ayiera, Julius Kioga Muteithia, Hassan Mohamud Haji and Muriuki Karue.

In 2020, Ms Michuki was asked by the London-based fair standards lobby, the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP), to lead teams in Kenya, Malawi and Rwanda to drive reforms to improve the means of subsistence of small farmers and workers.

She was also a member of a government-appointed task force whose mandate was to advise the state on reforms that could help streamline the tea sector in the country.

The AFC Board of Directors is chaired by Franklin Bett, former Minister of Roads.

The agency’s mandate includes providing credit and technical assistance to clients covering agriculture, rural development and food security.

In recent times, it has encouraged lending to women-led businesses as part of its Affirmative Action Window for Women.

Of AFC’s total loan portfolio of 8.7 billion shillings, women make up just 25%, although their loans are far more productive than those of their male counters, the agency said last year. .
